The diaphragm is the key instrument for breathing and the all-star of core stability. The diaphragm is a dome shaped structure that is made up of muscle and other fibrous tissue. It is located at the base of the lungs and separates the lungs from the abdominal content. It has many roles but the two major functions are proper respiration and core stabilization.

There are 2 ways you can breath – ideal breathing or dysfunctional breathing. The majority of Americans breathe dysfunctionally. Most of us were taught at a young age to tighten and suck our bellies in and push our chests and butts out!!! This promotes a dysfunctional breathing and stabilizing stereotype, which can cause pain, increase the chance of injury and keep us from performing at our highest levels.

In ideal diaphragm function, the entire diaphragm pushes down into the abdominal cavity and can be observed by an expansion of the lower ribcage and the abdominal wall in all directions. This provides greater breathing capacity and stabilizes the core – two essential contributors to optimal health.
